What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minor and safe surgical procedure used to diagnose and/or treat various conditions of the uterus. In this procedure, a thin telescopic instrument, called a hysteroscope, is inserted into the uterus to view the internal structure for diagnosing or treating the conditions.

Indications to do Hysteroscopy:

• Intermenstrual bleeding
• Postmenopausal bleeding 
• Heavy menstrual bleeding with a thick lining of the uterus
• Polyps or submucosal fibroids detected on ultrasound
• Uterine septum or adhesions needing treatment/removal
• Difficulty getting a pregnant or recurrent miscarriage

How is Hysteroscopy Done?

The procedure is done under general anaesthesia in the operating theatre and it takes 15 -20 minutes. Cervix, the opening of the uterus is dilated with dilator instruments and the hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervical canal and slowly advanced into the uterus. Liquid, usually normal saline, is released from the hysteroscope into the uterus, thereby expanding the cavity, allowing for a better view of the inside of the uterus, especially the lining of the uterus and the openings of the fallopian tubes in the uterus. Surgical instruments are passed through the hysteroscope if other surgical procedures are to be done. \

What can I Expect After Hysteroscopy?

You will be allowed to go home the same day. You will have mild vaginal bleeding and mild cramps for few days after the procedure which is not a cause for concern.

What are the risks of Hysteroscopy?

Infection, perforation and bleeding are rare complications of this procedure.

What Should I Do if I Experience any Problem During the Recovery Period?

You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the below-mentioned conditions:

• Fever
• Heavy vaginal bleeding
• Severe abdominal pain

When will the final results per available?

We will often take a tissue sample of the lining of the uterus, called a biopsy, which will be sent to a laboratory.  It usually takes 1 week to get back.
